Thank you for making it possible for us to begin to see the wide range of mostly terrible reality in our prisons. It’s really frightening what human beings can do to each other, and yet there is this effort that changed at San Quentin. I do hope your ex had some opportunity for recovery after so many years in solitude. Mostly, I can only pray that human beings continue to try to grow in the direction of deeper caring.

Judith thank you SO much for your comments. It's something that gets no press, because the mission is to keep the department looking good for taxpayer dollars. Prison is brutal. And yes, carceral humanism is important, for sure. And I agree with you about evolving in the direction of humanizing, caring. My ex walked out of prison after 29 years, never heard from him again. I doubt he has recovered, because he went back into the life. He was so capable of greatness, but I don't think many truly escaped the SHU tortures. Thank you though!

Thank you for writing this Beth. Like Adam, I am left nearly speechless by reading about Martin. When will we learn how to treat every person with the respect they deserve? 💔

Thank you Ruth, so much. I don’t know when … but each act of kindness and respect DOES change the field. I thank you from my heart for reading, and for caring. XO
